The Atlanta area offers many outstanding day schools, each with its own philosophy regarding academics, extra curricular activities, athletics, and community involvement. During 22 years as Headmaster of Pace Academy and 10 years of consulting with families, I have gained a thorough knowledge of the qualities that distinguish each school and student body. While there a number of similarities among the schools' admissions requirements, there are many variables. Knowing how to navigate the independent school admission highway will give your student a "leg up"; it is my responsibility to provide the road map.

  • All schools (traditional and speical needs) typically follow a similar timeline from initial inquiry to admission decision (exceptions generally found in preschools which terminate with PreK-4 or Kindergarten).
  • The Joint Admissions Testing Program consortium (JATP- grades K-3) observes a common notification date and reply date (early April). Students applying to grades 4-12 are required to take the SSAT test. As a member of SSATB, I receive test scores as if I were an independent school.
  • To be most effective, the family-consultant relationship should commence a minimum of 9-12 months prior to the conclusion of the process; however, a shortened time may also produce the desired result.
  • Our work together will follow the Strategies for Success process.

"Is boarding right for my child?"

Boarding is often a difficult choice for parents; however, an appropriate "match" between your child and a good boarding school offers many opportunities for growth and success. In a boarding school, a student experiences a greater degree of independence within in a structured, protective environment - faculty and their families become extended family, offering counseling and support. Students often find greater opportunities for participation in extra curricular and other activities.

Associated closely with Junior and Senior boarding schools throughout the country and having visited literally hundreds, I can present you with a clear vision of each school's total experience. After assisting you in determining if a boarding environment is best for your child, I will guide you in making an informed decision.

  • Boarding schools observe differing admissions timelines.
  • Many of the more selective, particularly eastern schools, stipulate a January/February application deadline, notify parents of results in early March, and require a decision in early April.
  • Some schools in The South allow a later application date with correspondingly later decisions.
  • Students are required to take the SSAT test; as a member of SSATB, I receive test results as if I were an independent boarding school.
  • In order to be most effective, our relationship should commence as soon as you entertain the idea of a boarding alternative.
  • Our work together will follow the Strategies for Success process.

The confidentiality of the counseling/family relationship will be honored in all regards.
